Also, part of the intestine is bypassed due to the surgery and this causes fewer calories to be absorbed, thus helping to lose weight.
What types of Gastric Bypass Operations are there?
There are 2 types of gastric bypass operations. The more common operation is known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass(RGB). This operation creates a small pouch in the stomach by stapling the stomach or vertical banding. There is also a Y-shaped section of the small intestine attached to the pouch. This allows food to bypass the duodenum and the first portion of the jejunum. The other type of operation is called an extensive gastric bypass (biliopancreatic diversion). In this operation the lower part of the stomach is removed and what remains of the stomach is connected directly to the final segment of the small intestine. This completely bypasses the duodenum and jejunum.
